Annual Silent Auction Benefits Foundation

The first silent auction benefiting the Texas Newspaper Foundation became part of the trade show in 2000.

The trade show was added to the Texas Press Association winter convention in 1975 and “gaily decorated and appropriately labeled” booths featuring “everything from the latest in cold type composition and offset supplies to a number of state agencies,” according to John Taylor, Seguin Gazette, who chaired the first trade show.

Over the past 20 years, the silent auction has become a shopping favorite among TPA members. The show features unique items from across the state, many donated by local merchants and advertisers through the newspapers in their communities. From locally produced food and beverages, manufactured items and jewelry to sports memorabilia, books, t-shirts and coffee mugs, there's something for everyone.

Over the years, thousands of dollars have been raised for the work for the Texas Newspaper Foundation, including the Texas Center for Community Journalism at Tarleton State University.
